Ralph Haver
Ralph Haver shaped more of postwar Phoenix than almost any single architect. Through his firm Haver & Nunn, he designed entire neighborhoods of modest, sun-smart tract homes at a moment when the Valley was growing quickly and looking for a new way to live.
His signature is unmistakable: low-slung rooflines, exposed post-and-beam construction, clerestory windows tucked under wide eaves, angled gable beams, masonry walls, integrated carports, and the patio port, a shaded outdoor threshold that blurred the line between parking, entry, and outdoor living. Haver homes were compact, efficient, and designed for the desert, with light, shade, breeze, and livability working together.
Today, original Haver homes in Marlen Grove, Starlite Vista, Mayfair Manor, Windemere, Town & Country Scottsdale, and other early subdivisions are among the most recognizable mid-century properties in the Phoenix area. Buyers come for the architecture, the scale, the indoor-outdoor living, and a kind of everyday modernism that has only become more compelling with time.
